This guide is based on Weight & Measure’s episode devoted to what clinical trials are, how people find them and what participation can involve.
- What do clinical-trial phases mean?
- How do inclusion and exclusion criteria work?
- What should I ask before joining a trial?
- Where can I search for obesity and GLP-1 studies?
What does a clinical trial actually test?
Trials can study safety, dosing, effectiveness, side effects or other outcomes. The question being asked determines the study design, participant requirements, visits and measurements.
Why might someone not qualify?
Studies use inclusion and exclusion criteria to enroll the population needed to answer the research question. Age, health history, medications, prior treatment and other factors may affect eligibility, and meeting a few visible criteria does not guarantee enrollment.
What is informed consent?
The episode discusses informed consent as an ongoing process for understanding the study, its procedures, possible risks and benefits, alternatives, privacy and the voluntary nature of participation. Prospective participants should have an opportunity to ask questions.
Where can people search?
ClinicalTrials.gov is a major public registry for studies. Weight & Measure’s Clinical Trials finder uses ClinicalTrials.gov information to make obesity-related studies easier to explore, while the individual study team remains the source for eligibility and enrollment decisions.
